Classroom Computers
As I teach it is my desire that students be able to transfer there knowledge from one area of study to another. For example when a student learns arithmatic they should be able to apply that to science problems.
With that philosophy in mind many students learn how to use computers by being told to simply by clicking here than here then here and never understand the basics of what is going on inside the computer. This is one of the main reasons that I have setup a Linux based terminals server my classroom. Of course there are other reasons such as easy to maintain, manage, and the low cost because student computers are old used computers that have been donated. Currently another donated computer is acting as the server (2 Ghz P4, 1GB Ram, 20GB HD IDE). I have two clients ready to go, I simply need to run the networking wire and they will be up and running. The next step is to upgrade the Server to the latest version of K12LTSP and we will be ready to roll.
My goal is to have about 4-6 computers available for students to use in the classroom. Because space is limited it would be nice if the student computers could be small thin clients with LCD monitors but I would settle for donated computers, which we have, and some LCD monitors. It would also be great if we could upgrade the server to be an actual server class computer or at least a dual core processor with more ram.
